Personal connections
Opt-in integrations you turn on yourself — your Gmail, your Discord, an MCP client, or your own AI account.
Personal connections are the integrations you turn on for your own account. They're all opt-in: nothing is connected until you turn it on, and you can disconnect at any time.
There are four:
- Gmail assistant — Ian On reads newly received mail and makes summaries, to-dos, and reply drafts for you.
- Discord — ask Ian On from Discord with
/ian. - Connect Claude Code (MCP) — let outside AI tools reach the operating brain.
- My AI Connections — use your own OpenAI/Claude account instead of the organization default.
You manage all of these in Settings. Open Settings with the account button at the top right of the screen (on a small screen, the gear icon).
Why a connection is missing or you can't connect
You can connect the Gmail assistant only when all three of these are in place:
- Your organization turns it on. An admin has to turn on Email Assistant in Admin → Features. If it's off, the Gmail Assistant Connection card doesn't appear in Settings. If you already connected an account, the card stays so you can Disconnect it.
- An admin prepares the Gmail assistant. An admin sets the company's Google OAuth app details (Client ID and Secret) in Admin → Email assistant and turns on Enable Gmail assistant. If this is off, the card shows the notice “The admin needs to turn on the Gmail assistant before you can connect.” instead of the Connect Gmail button.
- You finish signing in. You complete the one-time sign-in (for example, Google's consent screen) that links your account.
If you get an error on Google's screen, ask an admin to check the settings in Admin → Email assistant.
To use Discord, an admin has to turn on Messenger Bots in Admin → Features and set up the bot in Admin → Messengers. If it's off, the Discord connection card doesn't appear, and you can only Disconnect an account you already linked. If it's on, run /ian link in Discord, open the link you get, and click Connect.
MCP doesn't need to be turned on. Any signed-in user can create a key under MCP API keys in Settings and connect with it.
